Emerald

This very small, natural, and untreated emerald, weighing 0.16 ct, was cut from a rough crystal weighing 0.60 ct. Despite its light weight, it possesses a surprisingly intense emerald-green color that gives the stone a fresh and very vibrant presence.

Natural growth features typical of emeralds are visible inside. However, they remain relatively subtle and leave enough transparent areas for the color to appear clear and vibrant. 

The combination of high transparency and vibrant brilliance is particularly appealing. When moved, bright green reflections cause the small stone to sparkle anew again and again. This makes it appear significantly more striking than its weight of just 0.16 ct would initially suggest.

The octagon cut emphasizes its clean geometric shape and complements the intense green color very well. The beveled corners give this small emerald a precise, elegant appearance, while the facets effectively enhance its transparency and play of light.

Its untreated condition is also particularly noteworthy here. The color, transparency, and natural internal characteristics have not been altered by any subsequent treatment. The stone thus authentically displays the properties of its original crystal.

Emerald is the intensely green to blue-green gemstone variety of the mineral beryl. Its characteristic color is primarily due to chromium and/or vanadium, while iron can also influence the hue. Emeralds with a rich, balanced green color, good transparency, and a vibrant internal color effect are particularly prized.

n so-called chromium and vanadium emeralds, the difference lies primarily in the trace elements responsible for the green color. Chromium is the classic color-giving element in many traditional emeralds, while in other deposits, vanadium can play a significant or even dominant role in color formation. Both can produce very high-quality emeralds. A definitive distinction cannot be made based solely on the appearance of the color; it requires gemmological or spectroscopic analysis. Therefore, what determines the quality is not whether chromium or vanadium predominates, but how beautifully the color, saturation, transparency, and play of light of the individual stone interact.

Natural growth features and inclusions are particularly characteristic of emeralds and are often perceived as part of their individual “jardins.” At the same time, transparency and clarity significantly influence their value. Since many emeralds are treated with oil or other substances to enhance their appearance, unoiled or untreated emeralds with attractive natural color are particularly sought after. Color, transparency, clarity, cut, carat weight, treatment, and origin all contribute to determining the quality and value of an emerald.
