The Origin of Every Gemstone

The story of each of our gemstones often begins unremarkably. When a rough stone is found - whether directly from the host rock or from a secondary deposit - its future beauty is usually not yet fully visible. The surface is rough, the crystal is still partially embedded in the matrix, and the shape is irregular. Light and color are often visible only in small areas. And yet, even in this state, everything that defines the future gemstone is already hidden within: its color, its structure, its rarity, and its unique potential.

Selecting the Rough Stone

For us, the work begins with the selection of the rough stone in Africa. This first step requires experience, patience, and a trained eye. We examine color, transparency, crystal shape, inclusions, cracks, and growth zones. Some rough stones reveal their potential immediately; others must first be examined more closely, examined under light, and assessed from various angles. This raises the crucial question: What kind of cut gemstone can be created from this rough stone?

Customized Cut Planning

Selection is followed by planning. This is one of the most important steps on the path to a finished gemstone. No two rough stones are alike. That is why the cut that best suits each stone is determined on a case-by-case basis. An oval cut, a cushion cut, a pear, an emerald cut, or a free-form cut can produce completely different results. The key is to choose the shape that best showcases the natural color, skillfully incorporates any inclusions, and gives the stone harmonious proportions.

Balancing Weight, Color, and Beauty

This always involves careful consideration. Of course, as much weight as possible should be preserved. At the same time, carat weight must never take precedence over the beauty of the finished gemstone. Sometimes a stone only reveals its full brilliance once material has been deliberately removed. A smaller, well-balanced, and luminous gemstone can be significantly more valuable and expressive than a heavier stone with unfavorable proportions.

Work on the Cutting Machine

Next, the cutters begin the actual cutting process. Step by step, the rough stone is transformed into a gemstone with shape, facets, and light. First, the basic shape is carved out. Then the individual facets are created, which later provide brilliance, depth, and vibrancy. Each facet influences how light enters the stone, is reflected, and exits again. This process is particularly challenging when it comes to colored gemstones, as the cut must not only sparkle but, above all, optimally showcase the stone’s natural color.

Precision and Experience

The stone is checked repeatedly during the cutting process. Small adjustments can have a big impact: a slightly altered angle, a more harmonious curve, a more precise table, or improved symmetry. Through artisanal precision and experience, a stone gradually emerges that has not only been cut but truly understood.

The Final Polish

The process concludes with the polish. Only this step brings the surface to life, fully revealing the stone’s color, transparency, and brilliance. The once-rough rough stone has now become a cut gemstone - with its own radiance, its own history, and a character that stems directly from its natural origin.
