Emerald

This natural, untreated emerald, weighing 1.86 ct, was cut from the same 16.29 ct rough crystal. Together with its 1.67 ct cushion-cut sister stone, it retains the characteristic blue-green color palette of the original crystal, yet displays it in a significantly more austere, geometric form.

Its color is a rich, deep emerald blue-green with beautiful saturation. It is precisely this depth of color that gives the stone a strong presence and makes it appear very expressive despite its clearly visible natural internal structure.

The crystal features visible growth characteristics typical of emeralds, as well as clearly discernible dark to black inclusions. These features clearly shape the stone’s appearance and make its natural formation immediately apparent. The darker areas, in particular, enhance the impression of depth and structure.

The emerald makes its impact less through sheer brilliance than through color, transparency, and spatial depth. Depending on how the light falls, individual green areas appear more vivid, while others seem darker and more compact. This creates a lively, multi-layered effect that suits this stone very well.

The precisely executed octagonal cut emphasizes the gemstone’s clear, almost architectural form. The beveled corners and straight lines lend the stone a sense of calm and structure, creating an intriguing contrast to its natural, distinctly defined interior.

Its untreated condition is also particularly noteworthy here. The color, transparency, and internal characteristics have not been altered by any post-treatment. As a result, the emerald reveals its original color and structural qualities.

Together with the 1.67-carat cushion-cut sister stone, this 1.86-carat emerald beautifully illustrates two different expressions of the same rough crystal: one softer and more open, this one deeper, more geometric, and more striking. That is precisely what gives it its special appeal.

Emerald is the intensely green to blue-green gemstone variety of the mineral beryl. Its characteristic color is primarily due to chromium and/or vanadium, while iron can also influence the hue. Emeralds with a rich, balanced green color, good transparency, and a vibrant internal color effect are particularly prized.

n so-called chromium and vanadium emeralds, the difference lies primarily in the trace elements responsible for the green color. Chromium is the classic color-giving element in many traditional emeralds, while in other deposits, vanadium can play a significant or even dominant role in color formation. Both can produce very high-quality emeralds. A definitive distinction cannot be made based solely on the appearance of the color; it requires gemmological or spectroscopic analysis. Therefore, what determines the quality is not whether chromium or vanadium predominates, but how beautifully the color, saturation, transparency, and play of light of the individual stone interact.

Natural growth features and inclusions are particularly characteristic of emeralds and are often perceived as part of their individual “jardins.” At the same time, transparency and clarity significantly influence their value. Since many emeralds are treated with oil or other substances to enhance their appearance, unoiled or untreated emeralds with attractive natural color are particularly sought after.
