Emerald

This natural, untreated emerald, weighing 0.72 ct, was cut from a rough crystal weighing 3.12 ct. Its exceptionally beautiful emerald-green color exhibits a fresh, at times almost turquoise-green character, giving the stone a vibrant and distinctive radiance.

Natural growth features typical of emeralds are visible within the crystal. They are clearly part of its natural appearance and make the stone’s formation immediately apparent. At the same time, certain areas remain beautifully open, allowing the color and play of light to come alive.

The interplay of intense color, partial transparency, and vibrant brilliance is particularly captivating. Depending on the angle of the light, some areas appear brighter and fresher, while others seem slightly deeper and richer. It is precisely this contrast that gives the emerald a beautiful inner movement.

The round cut is relatively uncommon for emeralds and gives this stone a character all its own. The soft, closed shape makes the green color appear very compact and enhances the stone’s bright, vibrant overall effect. As a result, the emerald appears friendly, open, and at the same time very striking.

Its untreated condition is also particularly noteworthy here. The color, transparency, and internal structure have not been altered by any subsequent treatment. This allows the stone to reveal its natural color and distinctive internal structure in all their authenticity.

For me, its special appeal lies above all in its fresh emerald- to turquoise-green hue, its vibrant radiance, and its round shape - which is rather rare for emeralds. Its appeal lies not in flawless clarity, but in its color, naturalness, and individuality.

Emerald is the intensely green to blue-green gemstone variety of the mineral beryl. Its characteristic color is primarily due to chromium and/or vanadium, while iron can also influence the hue. Emeralds with a rich, balanced green color, good transparency, and a vibrant internal color effect are particularly prized.

n so-called chromium and vanadium emeralds, the difference lies primarily in the trace elements responsible for the green color. Chromium is the classic color-giving element in many traditional emeralds, while in other deposits, vanadium can play a significant or even dominant role in color formation. Both can produce very high-quality emeralds. A definitive distinction cannot be made based solely on the appearance of the color; it requires gemmological or spectroscopic analysis. Therefore, what determines the quality is not whether chromium or vanadium predominates, but how beautifully the color, saturation, transparency, and play of light of the individual stone interact.

Natural growth features and inclusions are particularly characteristic of emeralds and are often perceived as part of their individual “jardins.” At the same time, transparency and clarity significantly influence their value. Since many emeralds are treated with oil or other substances to enhance their appearance, unoiled or untreated emeralds with attractive natural color are particularly sought after. Color, transparency, clarity, cut, carat weight, treatment, and origin all contribute to determining the quality and value of an emerald.
