Emerald

This natural, untreated emerald, weighing 0.33 ct, was cut from a rough crystal weighing 1.14 ct. Its distinctive color is a fresh, vibrant turquoise-green that gives the small stone a very clear and modern appearance.

The crystal features growth characteristics typical of emeralds, as well as a visible natural black inclusion. These are integral to the stone’s unique appearance and attest to its natural origin. Despite these structures, individual areas remain beautifully transparent, giving the color a lively and open appearance.

It is precisely this alternation between transparent, luminous zones and more heavily structured areas that gives the emerald an interesting sense of depth. Depending on how the light falls, the turquoise-green appears at times brighter and fresher, and at other times slightly deeper and more saturated.

The square octagon cut gives the stone a clear, geometric shape with strikingly beveled corners. The calm, almost architectural lines complement the cool, turquoise-green color very well and make the small emerald appear surprisingly striking despite its light weight.

Particularly noteworthy is its untreated condition. The color, transparency, and internal characteristics have not been altered by any subsequent treatment. As a result, the emerald reveals its natural hue and characteristic internal structure in their unadulterated form.

Its appeal lies less in its flawless clarity than in the combination of its unusual turquoise-green color, partial transparency, natural texture, and clear geometric shape. It is precisely this combination that gives the 0.33-ct emerald its very distinctive character.

Emerald is the intensely green to blue-green gemstone variety of the mineral beryl. Its characteristic color is primarily due to chromium and/or vanadium, while iron can also influence the hue. Emeralds with a rich, balanced green color, good transparency, and a vibrant internal color effect are particularly prized.

n so-called chromium and vanadium emeralds, the difference lies primarily in the trace elements responsible for the green color. Chromium is the classic color-giving element in many traditional emeralds, while in other deposits, vanadium can play a significant or even dominant role in color formation. Both can produce very high-quality emeralds. A definitive distinction cannot be made based solely on the appearance of the color; it requires gemmological or spectroscopic analysis. Therefore, what determines the quality is not whether chromium or vanadium predominates, but how beautifully the color, saturation, transparency, and play of light of the individual stone interact.

Natural growth features and inclusions are particularly characteristic of emeralds and are often perceived as part of their individual “jardins.” At the same time, transparency and clarity significantly influence their value. Since many emeralds are treated with oil or other substances to enhance their appearance, unoiled or untreated emeralds with attractive natural color are particularly sought after. Color, transparency, clarity, cut, carat weight, treatment, and origin all contribute to determining the quality and value of an emerald.
